Furniture Objects By Architects Pop-Up #FOBA

In conjunction with the Chicago Architecture Biennial and AIA Chicago, Architecture Is Fun transformed an empty storefront into a pop-up of Functional Objects By Architects (FOBA). Inspired by museum-minded concepts of open storage, the architecture took form as industrial shelving with a straightforward layout, branded wall graphics and a curated collection; all of which turned a generic gallery into a design destination.

With a challenging set of parameters, from object weight and size to the all-volunteer construction crew, the solution is both economical and utilitarian. The pop-up feels like a cabinet of curiosities, not a crowded repository. The simple design solution eases the logistical issues of display while demonstrating these functional objects need to be seen – and the more, the better.

Branding the space in signature AIA red pops FOBA out into the mall, making an impression on social media. This entices shoppers and architecture biennial guests to view these objects, selected for their diversity in design, nature, scale, and function.

With shelves bristling with objects from furniture design to lighting and from textiles to lifestyle accessories, FOBA’s branded design solution puts the wide range of talents of AIA Chicago members on display, recognizing the contributions architects make in commercial, private and institutional worlds.
